American Vintage travels round the world to meet its brand-ambassadors and discover their inspirations, style and passions.

Today we’re going to be diving into the daily life of a champion freediver, taking a walk through nature with a folk music writer, hitting the fast lane with the latest French skateboarding prodigy and talking style with a female director and model in Berlin.

Arnaud JeraldArnaud Jerald

Into the deep with freediver @arnaudjerald

Arnaud Jerald is a 24-year-old freediver from Marseille who keeps on putting in world-beating performances, with a new record in Greece in September.

AMV
What was on your mind on Tuesday, September 15th, when you set a new free diving world record?

Arnaud
I was pretty calm, with just the right amount of pressure and the song “The Look of Love” going round my head. I felt very humbled by my win, and really lucky to have been able to beat the record in the middle of the pandemic, when it was difficult to train. This is something I’ve been working towards, and it’s a unique moment in my career.

AMV
What do you feel when free diving?

Arnaud
I feel like I get to know myself. Going down in the deep blue, is an introspective experience. The way I dive, it’s almost like a romance. The deeper I go, the more I become like the water. I become one with the water. It’s a poetic experience, but it’s important to have a humble relationship with the sea, without ignoring the risks that you’re taking.

AMV
What do you wear when you’re not in your diving gear?

Arnaud
I’m a bit out of the ordinary in life, and I guess that comes across in my style. I like clothes that break the mould, clothes that stand out. American Vintage fits with where I’m at in life at the moment, with its neutral approach to clothing, solid materials and enduring style.

Bon AirBon Air

Inspired folk music from Gaëtane, one half of @bonairofficiel

Gaëtane is a former competitor on the TV show Nouvelle Star, the French version of Pop Idol, and forms half of the group Bon Air with her partner Guillaume. Together they write inspiring untamed folk music which reflects their love of nature.

AMV
What’s your morning routine?

Gaëtane
I like to chill out, mull over my dreams and have some me-time while Guillaume drinks his coffee outside to find inspiration for the day.

AMV
What essentials do you take on tour with you?

Gaëtane
I go for American Vintage essentials that mix comfort, style and good materials. Basics like a dress or a T-shirt under a sweatshirt or cardigan, with a preference for neutral colours like cream, soft off-whites and black jeans.

AMV
In terms of style, what do you have in common as a couple?

Gaëtane
I like Guillaume’s cool side and his excellent taste, and he likes my simplicity. I often borrow his sweatshirts after surfing, and his shirts in winter.

AMV
What landscape impacted you most recently?

Gaëtane
For our Mystic Tour II, we move around a lot and stay with members of the audience who want to host us. So, we recently discovered the port of Doëlan in Brittany, which is both peaceful and buzzing with energy. We were also enthralled by Étretat and its breath-taking cliffs.

Leonie JungLeonie Jung

The life in style of @leonieyoung

Leonie Jung is a multi-talented director, model, influencer, painter and more. We followed her to Berlin, where she shared her wellbeing tips and feminist vision of the world.

AMV
Can money buy style?

Leonie
Fashion is a form of self-expression, if you throw out the rules. If you like something, wear it! So, yes, I think money can buy style.

AMV
What are your favourite trends at the moment?

Leonie
I like staying simple, and I love wearing bright purple, bright blue and lots of beige. These are my go-to colours of the season!

AMV
How do you express your personality through what you wear?

Leonie
You can wear anything you want, as long as you believe in it. For me, what I wear always depends on my mood. When I'm tired, I like to wear something comfortable, like a pair of sweatpants. When I’m behind the camera, I’m more into hoodies and oversized sports trousers. I want to be free to move. If I’m taking my dog for a walk, I always mix old bits and pieces from my wardrobe that I don’t wear any more. If I’m going out for dinner, I go for a nice pair of jeans, a shirt, a leather jacket and boots.

AMV
Anything you’re particularly into at AMV this winter?

Leonie
I like everything, but I particularly fell in love with the long Onobay coat, with its shawl collar and soft feel. I’ve been wearing it every day since the weather turned cool. It’s stylish and comfortable!

Vincent MatheronVincent Matheron

In the fast lane with skateboarder @vincent_matheron

The latest skateboarding prodigy, Vincent Matheron, is a daredevil by nature, and relies on a cool attitude for this extreme sport.

AMV
What do you wear when you’re skateboarding?

Vincent
I like to feel comfortable, with baggy trousers and a simple skater T-shirt when it’s warm. The off-white American Vintage Snopdog is perfect, with its oversize cut in the thighs, and tapered ankles.

AMV
Do you have a favourite look for competitions?

Vincent
For competitions, I mix a classic pair of jeans with a more colourful T-shirt. Anything from burgundy to blue or fluorescent colours, for a real ‘80s look. Sometimes, I just wear black and white.

AMV
What’s your philosophy for tough times?

Vincent
When you fall down, get back up again, and you’ll come out twice as strong.

AMV
What do you like about skateboarding?

Vincent
What's most exciting is the speed, a bit like surfing. I do a bit of surfing too to wind down at the beach with my friends.
